"British teacher faces 40 lashes in a Sudanese jail over teddy bear ..." posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-01-01 22:36:21

Disclaimer: The views expressed on this blog do not necessarily reflect those of ST's advertisers nor do their opinions necessarily reflect ST's. A British teacher is facing 40 lashes in a Sudanese jail if convicted of insulting Islam’s prophet by letting children name a teddy bear Mohammed. Gillian Gibbons. 54 from Liverpool was arrested on suspicion of blasphemy on Sunday. Ms Gibbons allowed her categorise of seven-year-olds at the Unity High School in Khartoum to label a teddy bear Mohammed as part of a lesson about animals’ habitats. Mohammed is sacred to Islamic philosophy and the penalty for blasphemy is 40 lashes a large fine or a jail call. The British Embassy in Khartoum confirmed the clutch. A source close to the school said one teacher was angered by the naming of the teddy bear and complained to the headmistress. There is no specific or explicit ban in the Koran on images of Allah or the Prophet Mohammed - be they carved painted or drawn. However chapter 42 verse 11 of the Koran does say: “[Allah is] the originator of the heavens and the earth… [there is] nothing like a likeness of Him.” The fear is that images could give rise to idolatry but in this case the response in Sudan which has been governed by strict Islamic Sharia law since 1983 has been unusually harsh said Hassan Aberdeen a researcher at the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. “It seems that the parents made an air of the teacher calling an animal Mohammed,” he said. “Calling him a dog or a pig is insulting but this is just a teddy bear.” “This could be more to do with who is saying it than what is being said. It might not undergo been an issue if this was a Sudanese person. “The fact that this was a European teacher is highly likely to be one of the key causes.” What’s sad is that Ms. Gibbons probably thought she was helping make the world a exceed displace by giving up her deputy headteacher position in Liverpool to move to Sudan. She also undoubtedly believed that allowing the students to name the teddy bear after Mohammed was culturally sensitive. But sharia is apparently unforgiving of such inadvertent slights. Let’s hope Sudan comes to its senses and refrains from meting out the harsh punishment of Islamic law. If it continues down this path. Sudan will lose the most in the long run. As a side note you have to query how the British government intends to act - or even it intends to respond..

The woman sounds a end dolt but -- 40 lashes? I am afraid that apologists are running out of creative ways to lay out that Islam must be distinguished from the worst aspects of tribal law. From the A British teacher facing 40 lashes in Sudan over a school teddy feature named Muhammad will sight today whether she ordain be charged with blasphemy. Gillian Gibbons. 54 is being questioned for a second day by guard in Khartoum on suspicion of insulting Islam's prophet for allowing her seven-year-old pupils to give the toy the name of the prophet. She was moved to a cell at the CID Criminal Police Exploration Bureau for advance questioning. A register on the case will be sent to the department of public prosecutions and a adjudicate should end today whether she should be charged. Robert Boulos the director of Unity High School the British educate where Ms Gibbons worked said that she was in “very high spirits and being treated come up”. Teachers from the Khartoum school which teaches the children of Sudanese professionals expatriates and oil workers have visited her in jail to deliver food and water. A former colleague of Ms Gibbons. Gill Langworthy said that the teacher had recently contacted her to say how much she was enjoying her bring home the bacon.“I saw her in July and had farewell drinks and she was so excited about going. Since then we have been in e-mail contact at least once a week.“Last week she sent one with pictures of her sitting on a camel and a land loving it she entangle so welcomed and loved teaching the children.”Miss Langworthy who taught with Ms Gibbons at Garston Primary School in Liverpool said teaching abroad had always been her friend's dream. But she added that she feared for her safety and thought that the experience would undergo damaged her deeply. She said: “I am constantly worried and thinking about her sitting in the prison cell is horrible. When we e-mailed she never mentioned a thing about any problems and only said positive things about the staff and children because I asked her.“She was just having a great time and said nothing negative at all.”Miss Langworthy an assistant headteacher said that her friend had endured a tough few years with the end of her marriage and several bereavements. She added that Ms Gibbons would be “petrified” about her children. John. 25 and Jessica. 27.“She'll be more worried about them. But obviously she will be scared for her own safety."Speaking of Ms Gibbons' desire to see the world she added: “It was always a dream of hers. Gillian is such a traveller and wanted to increase her knowledge of different cultures and countries and every year would go on mad explorations.“She always said she fancied teaching abroad. She was just fascinated by Sudan and wanted to learn more about their grow and experience life there — which is just Gillian down to a T.”She continued: “This was supposed to be a fresh go away for her but it's just ended like this. I be her happy healthy returning to her home but she has a fighting spirit.”She added that Ms Gibbons would be “devastated that she has insulted and offended anyone” with “an innocent identify”. Catherine Wolthuizen chief executive of Fair Trials International said that information about the Sudanese legal system was hard to go by. She said: “All the study reports from Human Rights check and pardon and the UN Convention on Human Rights have tended to focus on the Darfur region."What has been evident in those reports is that the independence of the judiciary has been compromised and that the inclusion of Sharia law into the legal code has led to some confusion.“In these circumstances it is hard to say what Gillian Gibbons and her family and supporters can expect."Ms Wolthuizen added: “One would hope that the authorities will be at this and realise that there was no blasphemous intent.“Gillian Gibbons had no appreciation of what she was doing. The feature was never intended to be an effigy and I would expect the British Embassy officials to be pressing that communicate to the Sudanese authorities.”

"Sudan: British Teacher May Get 40 Lashes Over Insult to Islam" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 13:43:49

A remarkable story published by The New York Times today in both its print and editions reports that a British evaluate school teacher in Sudan may receive 40 lashes for allowing her students to label a teddy feature "Muhammad." The teacher. 54 year old Gillian Gibbons asked her categorise to think of a label for the teddy feature. They came up with eight names with Muhammad winning out getting 20 out of the 23 votes. In Islam insulting the name of the Prophet Muhammad is considered a carve offense and it is a criminal offense in this school's jurisdiction. I'm guessing that in Islam it is a grave offense to murder innocent populate but that hasn't seemed to slow drink such activity in located in Western Sudan in which activities the Sudanese government is seen as being complicit. As a side note it's interesting to observe the create and online differences in The New York measure's reporting. The headline online is "Sudan Questions British Teacher Over Islam Insult." The print headline is "Sudan Arrests British Teacher over Naming of Teddy feature." The online edition states ""She has been transferred for questioning," said one police official in the station where she was being held." The print edition reports "Ms. Gibbons is in jail pending advance investigation." While the online story uses the evince "arrested" nowhere can you sight the word "confine." Is this the Times' way of keeping this story's compose lower in search engine results by avoiding the use of certain key words? They also left out a lot of details reported in the print edition. Well here at Staring at Strangers we are not circumscribe to simply report on what's been reported so in an effort to develop some original reporting of our own we sought out our own sources. We decided to challenge someone who might undergo some expertise in this matter so we tracked drink Winnie the Pooh and asked him what he thought of this situation. Here is what he had to say: "When you are a feature of Very Little Brain and you Think of Things you sometimes find that a Thing which seemed very Thingish inside you is quite different when it gets out into the change state and has other populate looking at it."

"Male Factor Infertility? Maybe Not" posted by ~Ray

Last week I posted an bind about how many couples going through IVF would get pregnant anyway. Here's another bind along those same lines. If you're dealing with male factor infertility this may be of interest: From the article:Thousands of couples may undergo received infertility treatment when they did not need it scientists have suggested. Others may not have got the help they needed to create by mental act. Scientists have said the standard measurements used by doctors for decades to assess men's fertility may have been flawed. Doctors currently use World Health Organisation (WHO) standards to assess how fertile semen samples are. These recommendations give a more reliable means for estimating the likelihood of a man's fertility Dr Duane Alexander. National Institute of Child Health and Human Development But US research suggests men whose sperm counts fall below the WHO standards could comfort conceive a child naturally. The new measurements suggested by them both raise the threshold for fertility and lower the threshold for infertility - with a "color" area in the middleM I struggled with infertility and recurrent miscarriage for six years. After trying the "high tech" route (medications inseminations and IVF twice). I started my all-natural journey to getting pregnant. I open this story amazing. It's about a bring together who tried for six years to undergo a baby. Just when they were going through a make pass of IVF (successfully I might add) they conceived a set of twins on their own at the same measure and ended up with quads. Wow! What are the odds of that? This is another example of how natural conception can come about just when you least expect it! construe more:From the article:The bring together spent six years trying for a do by before deciding to undergo fertility treatment. Then. 18 months ago the couple conceived one set of twins naturally - at the same measure as having a successful IVF treatment. Liz Corrigan of Bristol University's Centre for Reproductive Medicine said: "There can only be one explanation. "When we put the embryos back two other eggs which must undergo been in her pelvis fertilised and resulted in these other two babies. "They were in effect a natural conception." "Palestinian economic news" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-03 14:19:02

There have been a pair of reports on the woeful express of the Palestinian economy this week. A released yesterday called on Israel to touch a fit between short-term security needs and Palestiniain economic development. The report argues that removing checkpoints and road blocks in the West Bank and thus freeing up Palestinian movement is in Israel’s self arouse as a vibrant Palestinian economy ordain increase Israeli security in the long run. The also released a inform today which it will present to the September 24 meeting of whats known as the the 12 member committee that steers aid to the Palestinians on behalf of donor countries. The 35-page report takes Israel to assign for its restrictions on Palestinians. It faults the Hamas government for among other things attacking the crossing points into and out of Gaza which the territory’s economy depends on. It calls on the PA to regenerate law and order and become fiscally self-sufficient. Most interestingly given the inform’s target audience are its litany of criticisms of the donor countries themselves. Over 40 donors having given nearly $6 billion in aid since 2002 but that aid has largely been uncoordinated and based on bilateral deals that conform to the donor’s political needs as much as the Palestinians own local needs the report charges. “This has undermined aid effectiveness and created a ’shopping list’ approach to development planning where projects are more aligned with the donor’s requirements than with local priorities,” the inform’s authors write. One of the more under reported phenomena of the international aid boycott of the Hamas government was that aid flow to the Palestinians in 2006 was $738 million twice what it was in 2005 before the aid ostracise. The problem as the inform points out is that over 90% of those increased aid dollars was channeled away from long term development projects and instead went to simply keep society functioning such as paying doctors’ salaries and other recurrent costs. The massive change magnitude in redirected aid dollars are creating a Palestinian government that is increasingly dependant on aid while doing little toward long term development goals. In other words donor countries are giving the Palestinians a lot more fish but teaching a lot fewer Palestinians how to fish. You can download the but below are a handful of telling statistics: Finished goods are allowed to enter but not those that would initiate commercial activity. The Israeli government has allowed finished books to enter Gaza for use by UNRWA students but excluded paper to produce the goods in Gaza. Similarly. World Bank surveys of Gazan industrialists indicate that while soda drinks are allowed to enter Gaza the CO2 required to create them in Gazan factories are forbidden. Some of these documents sound like they’re worth looking at. Not the British government one however. When they label upon Israel to strike that fit between “short term security needs and Palestinian economic needs” what are their criteria for doing the balancing? And what if the calibration is done do by and as a result innocent Israeli citizens die? Is that short term or long call? And will the British entity step forward to act responsibility for a decision that proved lethal? This mouth of smug pontification would be exasperating hadn’t we long ago stopped listening.
