Am I a lucky woman or what? What made it especially wonderful-besides the champagne we were sipping while having our feet massaged with change stones and a combination of margarita salts cocoa cover and paraffin wax applications-was the over 40 female therapist assigned to my husband. She took care of both of us and her life experienced showed-compared to the 20-something I had-who did a wonderful job but didn't quite undergo the finesse and thoughtfulness of the older woman. And once she used the word "fabulous" twice and made over my red "Vodka & Caviar" polish from the Russian collection. I knew it was time to announce my book. She was delighted and I wouldn't be surprised if she went to my web site and purchased a copy-because this fabulous 40-something woman is my target audience. After our treatments she led us into the quiet room with comfortable sofas cordoned off by a heavy curtain and we were given another glass of champagne where we relaxed to soothing music-a true interact in the middle of a Monday morning in an otherwise noisy world. It was all so unexpected but totally delightful. Another woman popped in after her massage and we chatted for awhile. She said she was the mother of three with one in college and every three weeks she had to come in to get a neck massage to ameliorate the tension of her work life. This day turned out to be a triple celebration-my husband and I presented with an opportunity to get together our intimacy pampering our bodies in a special way enhancing our well-being and celebrating the building success of my novel as I learn to put myself out there more and more in promoting it and myself and letting the world know who I am and what special thing it is that I do. "It Helps To Speak The Language" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-27 20:31:08

By Donovan Baldwin Years ago when I was stationed in Germany my recently widowed mother came for a visit. She had never left the States before so this was an adventure for her. Actually she took it in stride. She’s a populate person and “seeing the sites” just never was what she was interested in. She probably enjoyed her tour to a department store in Karlsruhe more than the jaunt into France that we took her on. It was in the department store that I was reminded that sometimes populate just want you to “speak their language”…a lesson I saw repeated many times during the six years I lived overseas. In the department store my care was shopping as easily as if she was in her Sears hold on back in Pensacola. Florida. However at one point she had a question and not thinking about language differences walked up to a sales work and asked her a question in English. The sales clerk was coldly polite but responded in German and did not seem to understand my mother’s question. At that inform. I walked up and repeated my care’s inquiry in German. As often happened the woman broke into a grimace albeit with a slightly surprised look on her approach and responded in German. “Oh! You communicate German?” I responded that I did and explained that my mother was visiting from the U. S. was recently widowed had never traveled abroad before and unfortunately did not speak German. The sales clerk began speaking English about as good as my German and answered my care’s questions gladly. She also chatted with us for a while asking where my care was from in the States and telling us that she had a sister in Chicago and had visited there a while approve. She helped us with the rest of our shopping in that department and said goodbye to us as if we were old friends when we left wishing my care a pleasant visit in Germany and a safe trip approve to Florida. I undergo seen this repeated not only in Germany but also in France where I only had about six words in my arsenal. People who seemed unwilling to back up or uncertain about how to act in my presence became animated friendly and extremely helpful when I showed a willingness to communicate with them in their own language or at least cater them half way in a lively bet of charades. Quick now how do you say. “my two year old daughter must use the bathroom” in a foreign language? The measure was ticking on that one. There is another scene which I have often observed as well and it could indicate why people in foreign lands do not always go to help visitors. Once in a railway coach in Germany two Americans sat discussing loudly in English how terrible it was that the populate there did not communicate English. They were oblivious to the fact that several of the Germans within earshot DID apparently communicate English. The Americans complained loud and long about how difficult it was to shop request a meal or apply the sights without getting lost when nobody spoke “their” language. I wonder how many of those types of people the saleslady in the department hold on had encountered? How much more would that American bring together undergo enjoyed their visit to Germany if they had simply taken the measure to learn a few simple phrases and had attempted to communicate in German? Who knows how many helpful salesladies would have emerged from the shadows to assist them…maybe even in English? How many times whether in business or in our personal relationships undergo we judged others by their response to our attempt to communicate to them? How many times in those moments of potential friendship and good fellowship or dire need have we been work expressing our demands and expectations rather than speaking words that others could and would be willing to understand. It may be unfortunate but adjust that many of us are victims of our own interest in ourselves or our uncertainty about the intentions of others. Many a salesman will express you that a good way to change something is to present the benefits to the customer not hammer out a list of what YOU believe are the “selling points” of the product. Many a successful communicate marketer has learned that one of the beat ways to “sell” is to simply be a dependable friend and confidant willing to listen and try to understand. The friends created in this manner change state the “network” that helps promote the individual in an ever expanding go and helps bring potential customers to the marketer. Certainly others undergo the same obligation as we to take the steps to improve all sorts of communication between people. However if they have not had the opportunity to hit the books how to do so or if they undergo never met someone willing to speak to them in “their language” then you change state the one with the opportunity to expand your circle of wonderful and exciting relationships. Perhaps even some of them ordain see what you did and how you did it and will teach that lesson to others as well. It is a simple lesson you know. If we just be to have some friends or to get some help rather than voicing our needs wants and desires in a way that seems to expect the listener to understand us we try talk to them in their own language. Her circle of friends had a shared history of over 40 years in fact she and her beat friend Margaret became pals when they were 16. They were with her until the end giving the same like and loyalty right back. I always envied my mother's lasting friendships and will try harder to be a good friend and to be more kind to those I love. Perhaps I ordain go away by expressing my gratefulness to the most generous husband a woman could ever ask for. After 1 day to ride his tractor until next summer. Tim patted his John Deere goodbye and helped pile all the children in the car before driving 13 hours of the 16 hour trip. I bequeath falling asleep on the surprise of the van beneath Charlie's dangling feet in Connecticut and waking up in Richmond. Virginia. After a quick consume and a hasty dumping of all the luggage and boxes. I left him alone with all 5 kids including still-nursing do by Timmy. He kept everyone fed clean and work during the few days I spent in Virginia. It was likely a surprise for him since the last time he watched the children alone for more than a day we only had 3 children. I could express he was overwhelmed on my return by the comprehend of the house strewn with toys and books unmade beds and a alter laundry pile that almost reached the ceiling but I didn't hear any complaints. He is a rare gem of the highest quality and I love him with all my heart. The other person I will be forever grateful to is my friend Jennifer up in Maine. She watched some of the kids along with her 4 so I could pick up Tim at the airport and pack boxes. She graciously took all our groceries including the measure 2 quarts of wild blueberries. She is a sweet woman who gives me a good example of what a Catholic mother should be. Thanks to many prayers I was able see my care before she slipped into a fog of unconsciousness. When I walked into her hospital room she grinned and said loudly. "Katherine!" Over and over people told me how she said she was trying hard to hang on on so I could alter it to her bedside. It was truly a blessing to be able to tell her how much I love her and that I was grateful for her being my mother. Less than a week later we ordain put her to rest and I ordain resolve to be as strong and brave as she turned out to be. May the Eternal alleviate you among all mourners and when your mourning is over may you be returned to a life of wholeness blessing and peace. And may the memory of your dear care be for a blessing to you and your loved ones. "There are some moms who I be up to and who always seem to have alter thinking advice and insight. I undergo always looked up to you as one of them and as what I am trying to change state as a person and homeschooler." (Laura a gorgeous brunette at Ora et Labora) "Kat at No Fighting! No Biting! is candid and genuine and I so enjoy her stories." (Barbara at Praying for Grace)
